Unlike their opponents Cameroon, New Zealand have yet to score a goal in this tournament, yet their current world ranking (19th, compared to Cameroon's placement at 46th) is convincing enough to make them favourites to win this crucial fixture in Montpellier, which will see both teams take a final shot at qualifying for the final 16. They have, as their significators, Mars (Lord 1) and Mercury (Lord 10) whilst opponents Cameroon are awarded Venus (Lady of the 7th) and Jupiter (Lord 4).
The antiscion of the Moon at 22 Scorpio 56 is unlikely to be close enough inside the 1st house cusp to be of significant help to the favourites. The Moon's immediately applying trine to the antiscion of Mars (at 07 Gemini 13) is a different matter, and in the absence of any stronger testimonies, could prove a decisive advantage for New Zealand.
The Moon's applying trine to Venus (for Cameroon) happens a little too late (at just over 7 degrees this is just outside the limit of movement usually workable for football matches), but is a sign that, should the match go to extra time, this would be the best opportunity for Cameroon to turn the game to their advantage.
Even more tricky to judge is today's fixture at Reims between the Netherlands and Canada. Neither team has lost a game, and they currently reside joint top of their group. Canada have yet to concede a goal in this tournament and are (at the time of writing) in possession of slightly better odds to win, although with such well-matched teams, a draw is a distinct possibility. The astrology of the event chart is little help, the scarcity of testimonies adding to the lack of clarity. Our eyes may be drawn to that brooding opposition between Pluto and Mars, but this aspect is separating and John Frawley in "Sports Astrology" also observes that Pluto only makes his destructive influence felt when conjunct a significant house cusp or in aspect with Fortuna, her dispositor or antiscion.
That leaves the only testimony of significance as the immediately applying trine between the Moon and the antiscion of Mars at 07 Gemini 13. This, a likely sign of an early goal for the favourites, should help us identify which team they actually are. Verdict: The team which scores first is most likely to carry the day.
Later this evening, Sweden clash with tournament favourites USA at Le Havre in a game which is expected to show the true mettle of both teams. Ranked 1st in the world, the USA have yet to concede a a goal in this competition and are expected to win the match. As favourites, they are signified by Jupiter (Lord 1) and Venus (Lady of the 10th). Mars (Lord 4) and Mercury (Lord 7) represent their opponents, Sweden.
Jupiter just inside the 1st house cusp fortifies the favourites, but Venus' placement on the cusp of the 7th (showing the USA dominating their opponents) is a more powerful testimony.
For Sweden, Mercury conjunct Fortuna is highly positive and a sign that the USA won't be allowed to have everything their own way. The Moon's application to Venus (just within orb if extra time is allowed) points to victory for the USA, (and possibly even a late goal or penalty), but their resilience is likely to be severely tested by a tenacious Sweden.
Although both teams have yet to win a game this tournament, Thailand suffered a particularly heavy defeat at the hands of the USA, which makes them very much the outsiders going into this match against Chili tonight in Rennes.
Jupiter just inside the 1st house is a boon for favourites Chili, but they are supported by an even more decisive testimony in the application of Venus (Lady of the 10th) to the 7th house cusp.
Mercury (Lord 7) conjunct Fortuna is very positive for Thailand, but Chili have more testimonies in their favour and will be the team which controls the action. If extra time is allowed, there is the possibility of a late goal or penalty (shown by the Moon's application to Venus, Lady of the 10th) but even without this, Chili are the most likely victors.
